Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV)
Using both a gas and electric motor with a small battery, HEV's help increase fuel efficiency. The battery is charged from regenerative braking and the gas engine.

These hybrid-electric vehicles are self-charging and do not get plugged in.
Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV)
The PHEV utilizes both a gas engine for long trips and an electric motor for shorter trips (15-50 miles).

This vehicle needs to be plugged in to charge.
Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV)
These BEVs run exclusively on electric power. They don't have an internal combustion engine and produce zero emissions.

These vehicles must be plugged in to charge.

Frequently Asked Questions about Electric Vehicles at Cortese Auto Block

How long do Electric Vehicle batteries last?

While it can vary as technology improves, currently, EV batteries will last 8-10 years before needing replacement.

Does cold weather impact my EV's battery life?

Extreme cold temperatures can create a short term pull on your EV's battery due to battery inefficiency in cold weather, as well as the use of cabin heating. This is not a permanent condition, and battery life will restore when the weather gets warmer.

What's the cost of maintenance on an Electric Vehicle?

Standard maintenance is generally lower with Electric vehicles since they have fewer moving parts and no longer require oil changes. The average cost for an EV's annual maintenance runs from $150-600/year, and gas vehicles run around $800-$1800 when adding in oil changes, spark plugs, transmission service, brakes and pads, and other maintenance items. (Yes, your EV has brakes, but with regenerative braking, there's much less wear on the brake system.)

Should I buy or lease an electric vehicle?

Electric Vehicle technology is rapidly evolving. By leasing, you can put yourself in a better position to upgrade even couple years to keep up with the latest.

Is charging my EV more expensive than gas?

Charging an electric vehicle at home generally costs 30-60% less per mile than gasoline. Fast-charging on the road can be as expensive as gas, but if you generally charge at home, you will save money over time.

What should I consider before I purchase an Electric Vehicle?

Ask yourself a few questions and be prepared to discuss them with your salesperson.

  • How much range do you need? How far do you go, and how often?
  • Can you charge at home?  Do you have the ability to install a charger in your home?
  • Is there charging infrastructure in your area? Check out Google Maps to see what charging facilities are available in your area.
  • Are there any tax credits available? Ask our sales associates for information
  • Is leasing or buying better for you? Leasing can keep you freed up to upgrade more often, but can cost more over time.
  • What will insurance cost?  EV insurance can be somewhat higher since they generally have higher purchase prices and can require expensive specialized repairs.
